Re: “Writing Salon

Friday night’s Writing Salon was a welcome relief from the inner critic rather than the joyous expression of writing I usually experience during these group meetings. This was rather apropos considering Ms. Parent started that night’s session with a discussion of how the inner critic stops us from writing to our full potential. Talking about my adversarial writing partner, the one that finds my fantasy writing superfluous, my creative non-fiction lackluster, and my short stories boorish, feels rather akin to pulling a sleeping lion’s tail, but I did it anyways. In fact, the experience was refreshing, like acknowledging the elephant in the room.

After the small debriefing, my fellow writers and I were given the prompt of saying what we know we cannot say. Like every prompt, it’s meant to be taken however the listener desires. With Ms. Parent’s advice on how to deal with the inner critic and the freeing nature of the prompt, I produced a full-bodied story of things I could actually say to someone. Maybe it didn’t follow the stated intent of the prompt, but if fulfilled the underlying purpose of silencing my inner critic and inhibitions.

Of course my peers wrote witty and hilarious works about the things they want to say to someone. As always, it was a pleasure to share my writing with others and to give and receive supportive feedback. It was not my easiest day writing, but just like going to gym, there are always days that are harder than others. The point is to get on with it anyways. Thanks Ms. Parent for another successful writing session.
