Re: “In Striking Reversal, Shumlin Abandons Single-Payer Reforms

Does anyone else think it strange that the Governor did not compare the projected costs with what we are already paying for health care? Right now in Vermont we pay $7635 per person per year (1). Median VT household income is 54,267 (2). Average VT household size is 2.34 (3).

So current health care spending is 33% of median Vermont income!

Single-payer costs are simply the costs we already pay. The money just goes through different hands.

Killing off single-payer is all just politics, and Shummy should have admitted that.

Re: “The Chips Are Down: Does IBM Have a Future in Vermont?

It would be good to get an update on the groundwater contamination and ongoing cleanup of PCEs TCEs and whatever else is down there. Who's going to pay to keep the pumps and filters running?

As of 1998: "IBM must continue to pump groundwater out of the bedrock at a rate of roughly 13 million gallons a month, day-in and day-out, for decades to come. At worst, a breakdown would allow this pollution to spread. At best, the pumping keeps in check one of Vermont's worst groundwater pollution sites." From "IBM confronts toxic legacy: cleanup will cost millions, last for years": http://www.nasw.org/users/nbazilchuk/Articles/ibm1web.htm

As of 2014: "The EPA on Monday released its annual Toxic Release Inventory for each state. Once again, IBM's facilities in Chittenden County were easily the largest emitters of toxic chemicals in the state." http://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/24030/20140211/epa-toxic-releases-decline-in-vermont
