The Black Lillies have been appearing on buzzy lists of “Bands You Need to Know” for years now. But it hasn’t translated into the kind of national acclaim one might expect for the Knoxville group. That’s likely to change following the release of the band’s latest record, Hard to Please. With a renewed attention to song craft, a reinvigorated six-piece lineup and expert guidance from the Avett Brothers’ producer Ryan Hewitt, the album is simply a tour de force that challenges the notions of what Americana music can be.
