While much of William Shakespeare’s English Renaissance-era work has proved timeless, some stories and characters raise tough modern-day questions. Representation of the character Shylock, a Jewish moneylender at the center of The Merchant of Venice, for example, has been criticized as anti-Semitic. In New York City-based collective Compagnia de’ Colombari’s production of this powerful play, founding director Karin Coonrod addresses the issue by casting five actors of different ethnicities, genders and ages to play Shylock, shedding light on various aspects of his character. Three thought-provoking outdoor performances take place as part of SHIFT, a Dartmouth College live arts series inspired by the cultural disruption of the 1960s.
