Actress Courtney Wood has a special relationship with Pamela Gien’s one-woman play The Syringa Tree. When Wood came across the Obie Award-winning work as an acting student at Doane University, she took it on as her senior thesis. After performing the memory play off and on for three years, the actress brings each of the show’s 24 characters to life — without the support of elaborate costumes or props — in a Lost Nation Theater production directed by Kim Allen Bent. Based on Gien’s real-life experiences, The Syringa Tree tells the story of two South African families on the long road from apartheid to freedom from the perspective of a 6-year-old girl.
