Vote Now for the "Best of the Beasts"

The polls are open in our "Best of the Beasts" pet photo contest, sponsored by Play Dog Play. Click here to vote for your favorite pets.

The deadline for entries was yesterday at noon. At 2 p.m., our team of staff judges chose five finalists in each category — it was a tough job, let me tell you. There were about 500 entries to choose from.

At 5 p.m., we posted our finalists online and asked people to vote for their favorites. I've already gotten several emails from people who didn't understand why their pets weren't chosen. Sorry, folks. We'll have a slideshow featuring all of the entries next Wednesday, when we publish our "Animal Issue." The winners in each of the categories will appear in the newspaper, and online.

We also asked readers to submit their favorite pet videos. We only received nine submissions, and two of them we couldn't play. Oops! Our judges chose five finalists from that bunch, which you'll see when you vote.

This video of Loulah playing with her ball didn't make the cut. Sorry, Amy. But it was cute, so I'm sharing it here anyway.

Thanks, everyone, for submitting photos and videos! Please hurry and vote for your favorites — voting ends Monday at noon.

Burlington's Turning Point Center is a refuge for Vermonters who are trying to find their way out of drug dependence. In the stairwell leading to the center, a mural depicts a giant hand reaching down to a solitary slouching figure. Just outside the center's door at the top of the stairs, is another message: "You are no longer alone."
