Vermont's Rep. Peter Welch, who counts Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as one of his closest friends in the House, said the congresswoman's "kindness and graciousness knows no bounds."
Welch issued a brief statement In the wake of today's shooting in Arizona. The shooting reportedly left five people dead and another five wounded. Giffords was allegedly shot point blank in the head and underwent surgery this afternoon.
Giffords and Welch were both elected to Congress in 2006.
“Gabby Giffords is one of my closest friends in Congress. A persistent and effective legislator, she stands out for her warmth, genuine attentiveness and concern for all. Gabby is one of the best listeners I know. Her kindness and graciousness know no bounds," said Welch. “As this tragic situation develops, Margaret and I are keeping Gabby, her family, her staff and the many others involved in this horrific episode in our thoughts and prayers.”
Like Welch, Giffords this week has been outspoken about fighting GOP efforts to repeal last year's health care reform bill.
