Re: “Waterworks Food + Drink

I have long missed the old Waterworks, which dates back to my UVM days in the 1980s and survived despite the presence of construction cranes and mayhem as Winooski's downtown was reborn.

Now ten years later and fully renovated, it's more beautiful than ever.

We stopped by last weekend to check it out and had drinks at the bar -- which I recommend -- and tried out a couple of the appetizers to share, draft beers, and glass of wine with a friend.

This is a good call. You can check out the space and the restoration.

The chicken wings -- wings! -- were creative and sensational. So were the lamb meatballs with pomodoro and pita. Very tasty.

Despite the snow squalls outside, and virtually NO signage to tell a newcomer to town the restaurant is even there, the place was almost full -- tons of people streaming in and having a good time.

This tells you something about the reputation of WW's creator David Abdoo -- and probably the nostalgia people my age still had for the old Waterworks space I think.

The new staff is well trained, very attentive, and very friendly. The drinks and appetizers were generously sized -- and I thought fairly-priced, a good sign for long term success. Love the wine carafe options too, BTW.

The center-positioned huge bar has flat panels above (so we could eye the NFL playoffs Saturday night) and the warmth of the surrounding century old mill and the hum of the place was just a winner.

Of course, the view over the Winooski River is as good as ever.

We could not stay for dinner, but have to say the menu looked great. A little steep in some respects, but creative and there are plenty of options.

All in all, I'd say BRAVO! We look forward to many return visits.

Re: “How much do you eat out during Vermont Restaurant Week?

It's def one of my favorite weeks of the year, in a week without much to write home about, if you like to experiment and a little adventure. We have some amazing culinary choices in our little state.
