Free Breakfast Returns to the Farm

Alison Novak May 30, 2017 10:00 AM

Kids have a chance to see how food gets from farm to table at Breakfast on the Farm — two free pancake breakfasts, sponsored by the New England Dairy & Food Council. The first, on Saturday, June 17, takes place at Fairmont Farm, a third-generation dairy farm with 870 cows in East Montpelier. The second, on Saturday, July 22, will be held at Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, the first farm in the state to have a methane digester and a 100-kilowatt wind turbine that turns manure into energy. Both farms belong to the Cabot Creamery Cooperative; milk from their operations go into local cheese, butter and yogurt. At both hearty happenings, families can take self-guided walking tours, try milking a mechanical cow, feed baby calves, ride a bike that powers a smoothie blender and answer dairy trivia questions, like "How many gallons of milk does a cow produce each day?"

Both Breakfast on the Farm events take place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. To reserve free tickets, visit vermontbreakfastonthefarm.com.
