If you read only one story in this week’s issue of Seven Days — or in any Vermont newspaper, for that matter — make it Ken Picard’s bombshell cover story, “Unhappy Endings,” about prostitution in Vermont’s Asian massage parlors.
But if you read two stories, make it one of these. Better yet, read ’em all:
- Burlington International Airport has gotten some good press lately, but new numbers show a troubling drop in passenger travel. Newly appointed aviation director Gene Richards says he’s got a plan to turn it around.
- The Legislature has adjourned for the year, but a dozen summer study committees are just gearing up. Are those study committees laboratories for good legislation, or a graveyard for controversial bills?
- The Vermont Health CO-OP was denied a license last week to sell insurance on the health exchange. But state regulators weren’t the only ones criticizing the CO-OP’s plan — single-payer advocates had some harsh words for the member-owned nonprofit.
- Burlington’s magnet schools launched five years ago with a goal of improving student performance citywide, and diversifying neighborhood schools. Are they succeeding?
