There’s a new media aggregator on the block — Newsvine launched yesterday. Haven’t spent much time there yet, but it basically aggregates content from local and national news sources like local bloggers and the AP — and eventually Seven Days, I guess — onto one web page. Like a little online newspaper.

To find local news, you can click on our region, Burlington/Plattsburgh. Up there now are some AP stories and a blog post by beta tester Gahlord Dewald (husband of Seven Days calendar writer and 802 guest blogger Meghan Dewald). Apparently, placement of stories is user-driven (there’s a rating system), and anyone can post their own stories or articles they like from other sources.

I don’t have a review yet, since I’m still in the process of creating my account, but I think it has a lot of potential. The founders have experience at Disney and EXSPN, and they’ve been building this for awhile. A site like this makes a lot of sense on a lot of levels. I wonder if it’ll get mobbed by partisans or interest groups, or if it really will be a reflection of the community? Anyone try it out yet?

UPDATE: John Cook of the Seattle Post Intelligencer gives some background on Newsvine here. And keep in mind this is just one of several news aggregators popping up.

UPDATE II: Speaking of news aggregators, I want to put a plug in for one I like, altweeklies.com. It compiles some of the best stories from the alt. weekly newspapers across the country. Occasionally you come across some really great stories that you wouldn’t otherwise see.

Got something to say?
