Gov. Peter Shumlin and his fiancée, Katie Hunt, were married Tuesday night at their East Montpelier home.

Shumlin, 59, and Hunt, 31, announced in June they planned to marry but did not state a date.

An announcement from the governor’s office Wednesday morning said the governor’s sister-in-law, Evie Lovett, performed the ceremony. His daughters, Olivia and Becca, and his brother, Jeff, also attended.

Referring to Hunt as Vermont’s first lady, Shumlin said in the announcement: “We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful partnership and to be able to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Hunt is an artist, a landscape gardener and a student at Mount Holyoke College. Shumlin and his previous wife, Deborah, divorced in 2013.

The announcement said the couple plan to live in southern Vermont after Shumlin leaves office in January 2017. Both Shumlin and Hunt are from the Putney area. The three-term Democratic governor is not seeking reelection.

  1. @Penelope

Comparing the actions of a convicted child molester preying on young children with the consensual adult relationship of the Governor and his bride crosses the bounds of acceptable commentary — even for a public figure like Shumlin.

Describing what Fogle did (trading kiddie porn with children as young as six, paying other adults to procure minors to have sex, sexual victimiization of more than a dozen minors) as “pursuing girls half his age” is a disgusting and bogus comparison that minimizes the crime of child sexual abuse.

Whatever you think of Shumlin (I personally can’t stand him), he and his new wife are both adults and have been throughout their relationship. There is no absolutely valid comparison between the two situations.

  2. Congrats to the happy couple 😊
Just for the record, I thought that was was his daughter when I saw the photo…

  3. Is his daughters older or younger then his new wife.. seeing he divorced his wife in 2013 and he stated that he married his “longtime partner” does this mean he was cheating on his wife??

  4. Makes me think of Anna Nicole Smith and J. Howard Marshall. There must be some mathematical formula – if you have billions, a la Marshall, marry a Playboy Playmate of the Year and 50 year age difference OK. If you have 10 or 12 million, a la Shumlin, marry an attractive return to college student and 28-29 year age difference OK. I suppose if it makes everyone happy and they are both over the age of 18, certainly no harm, no foul.

Just hoping he didn’t use that same line about spending “the rest of our lives together” back at the first wedding in 1989-ish (when Katie was what, 5 years old).
