Known for rocketing to stardom via “America’s Got Talent,” the trailblazing standup next broke barriers as the first Latina cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” where she flexed her sketch muscles for six seasons.

Weston Theater launches its 90th season with Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash at the company’s Walker Farm space. The intimate jukebox musical — adapted from the 2006 Broadway production — walks the line through the storied career of the country music rebel. Fans can expect more than 30 of the Man in Black’s gritty hits, from “Folsom Prison Blues” to “Jackson.”

Artists grab their brushes and descend on downtown Middlebury for the Sparrow Plein Air Festival, a three-day show of outdoor painting prowess. The town-wide creative endeavor — named after the French expression meaning “in the open air” — calls to beginners and veterans alike with workshops, demos and a chance to display their work at the “Wet Paint” exhibit and sale.

Local, regional and even international breweries (guten tag, Germany!) rescue a classic beer style from under the shadow of the IPA at Black Flannel Brewing & Distilling’s Lagerfest. The sudsy soirée takes over the Green at the Essex Experience with a showcase of pours spanning a full spectrum of colors and flavors, alongside good eats and live tunes by Seth Yacovone Band.

Vermont’s Freedom & Unity Chorus

At McCarthy Arts Center in Colchester, “Voices for Immigrant Justice” brings together Lamoille Community Choir, Green Mountain Gospel Choir, and Vermont’s Freedom & Unity Chorus for an evening of choral kinship. A soul-filling program with a theme of solidarity benefits local nonprofits Migrant Justice and the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project.

Onion River Outdoors empowers cyclists to tackle one of three scenic routes across five central towns in the very Vermonty Tour de Creemee. The classic gravel grinder winds through historic villages, up rolling hills and past mountain vistas, with a finish line at East Montpelier’s Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, where all that hard work is rewarded with the state’s iconic summer treat.

Rebecca Driscoll joined Seven Days as calendar writer in 2024. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in art history and theater performance at Marymount Manhattan College and previously worked as senior coordinator for the Oscars’ library in Los Angeles.
