Jim Douglas Hit With a Pie in Montpelier Parade
In case you missed it, our governor got pie-d yesterday during a 4th of July parade. A 22-year-old dude apparently assaulted Jim Douglas by hitting him in the face with a whipped cream pie. Tough guy Barre mayor Thomas Lauzon took the guy down.
One More Taxi Story
The last, maybe. At least for now. Earlier today, I received an email from Duncan Adamson of South Burlington. One summer afternoon last July, Adamson and his wife took a CCTA bus into downtown Burlington. Then, after a night on the town, they tried to hail a cab at taxi stand near City Hall Park.…
Fourth Foolishness
My brother in Hawaii sent me this a few days ago and it seems fitting for the holiday: A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles in a year. Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles…
Plattsburgh to Self: Don’t Feel Bad
On June 30, Plattsburgh’s primary news organ, the Press-Republican, printed a defensive editorial entitled, “Comparison with Burlington unfair to Plattsburgh.” A reader had apparently written a letter to the Republican editor criticizing Plattsburgh city officials for not being more Burlington-like. According to the Republican, comparing P-Burgh to B-town is a little like comparing apples to oranges.…

Stop the Guilt — Buy a Composter
Every time I throw an orange peel, tea bag or other compostable item in the trash at home, I feel guilty.Well not any more! Sending it to the landfill is just wrong. This Sunday we stopped by the soon-to-re-locate Gardener’s Supply outlet store in Williston and got this sweet Beehive Composter for half price! (fyi…
UVM Canceled June 5 Live-Pig Surgery Training
On May 21, I reported on a controversial surgeons’ training program taking place at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. The course, “Advanced Trauma Operative Management,” or “ATOM,” gives area surgeons the opportunity to practice their knife skills on wounded pigs. A few area animal rights protesters say the course is inhumane and unnecessary.…
