Burlington City Arts curates art exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you've arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around!

In December, the Skyway features abstract paintings of vines and vegetables from artist Mary Hill, and Kate Longmaid's floral still lifes, on view in the Gates, are inspired by the beauty of Vermont. Kathryn Wiegers' painted murals, which she calls "studies of nature and mankind," appear by the escalator through the end of March. If you're going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step!

Through January and February, Gabrielle Tsounis' travel-inspired exhibit, "Down to Earth," appears in the Skyway, showcasing a bird's-eye view of nature as art. (Her work is based on photos taken from an airplane's window seat.) Karen Henderson's mixed-media textiles, which seek to connect self, place, emotion and time, are mounted in the Gates.

You might not realize it from the hustle and bustle of downtown, the postwar suburban sprawl of the New North End, or the hip postindustrial South End, but Burlington is pretty wild. Like, Henry David Thoreau/Walden Woods kind of wild. Despite its urban trappings, Vermont's largest city hides a treasure trove of natural wonders. The trick is knowing where to find them.
