An estimated 2,640 dwelling units around Burlington International Airport will be affected by noise levels at or above 65 decibels, according to projections released last week. (The decibels figure represents the estimated average noise level over a 24-hour period).
The increased noise is a factor both of the basing of F-35 fighter jets at BTV and an anticipated increase in commercial flights arriving at and departing the airport. Nearby residents got a preview the F-35s’ volume late last week, when four jets on their way overseas were diverted to the airport.
Homeowners within these high-noise zones could be eligible for soundproofing grants. Airport officials say they will apply for funds to protect housing values in the coming years. Use the map below to examine the estimated noise exposure zones and to find out what addresses fall within the zones. (And don’t worry: We won’t log any data you enter here.)

Average noise level over a 24-hour period! The noise has very little to do with these figures. If your house is quiet, and all of a sudden the stereo goes on at top volume, it could be as loud as one of the F-18s were. So instead of the hours you are sleeping, or away (50 db), or when you’re at home and talking animatedly (90 db), you would have a minute of 120 db. So the average in your home would probably go up a few db – it might be 60 db average. What counts are the minutes you are exposed to deafening volume. 20 db means four times louder. 80 db is twice the volume of 70 db. 140 db 100 feet away from you (a jet) is 8 times louder than when you run a chain saw 3 feet from your ear (110 db).
The average over a 24-hour period means nothing. Do you have 2.2 children? The average family does.
I live technically just outside the noise zone and I have measured 90db from the F16s. I think this map is a little overly optimistic. I don’t understand why we closed a bunch of Air Force bases around the country, and now we base fighter jets in neighborhoods where hundreds of houses need to be torn down because of the noise. It doesn’t make sense.
And now cue the “Because freedom! Merika!” responses from people who don’t have to ever sell a house in the noise zone.
Move out then. This is America. Without these jets, were all screwed. Liberals!!! Lol.
Youre the dummy who a bought a home near the airport. Lolz. Smarten up. Sounds crazy!!!
Do you live in a Noise Zone, Mr. Phishy?
It sure is easy to tell someone not to care about something, eh?
I hope you live where it’s loudest.
Those jets won’t save us. Good luck with the Flu, by the way.
