9/1/16: Crashing cars, the smell of petrol and a local nonprofit music organization entering its first derby: Thanks to a team effort that was years in the making, the Big Heavy World derby car entered the ring Thursday night at the Champlain Valley Fair’s Demolition Derby in Essex Junction, and James Lockridge saw his dreams realized. For twenty years, BHW has supported and promoted local musicians, building community and participating in diverse events like this.
To prepare for the demo derby, BHW joined forces with Burnett Scrap Metals – who donated the 1978 Chevy Nova, Jason “Tooth” Toothaker and Brian Clark painted the car and Center for Technology, Essex students got the vehicle up and running. Ian McCullough of the hardcore band Reverser was behind the wheel and ready to rumble. Thanks to its sweet paint job, #10 won the Best Appearance prize and was in good enough shape after its heat to enter another derby someday.
Music: Reverser, “Cyberdyne” and The High Breaks, Droppin’ Off with…The High Breaks, “The Big One” and “Egmont Overature Finale” Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Performed by Kevin MacLeod
