Casey + Hope = TLA
Murf over at False 45th has a fine post about the Jesus & Mary Chain, with links to live MP3s.
Seeing Hope Sandoval in J&MCs “Sometime Always” video made me reminisce about the wee lass and her hazy, lazy voice.
Yes indeed, I had a serious crush back in the day. Anyone who says guys don’t fantasize about running through the heather chasing butterflies with an ethereal moon pixie are full of shit.
I recently watched an old clip of Mazzy Star performing on “Conan O’ Brien.” After they finish playing, Conan comes over to congratulate the musicians, as he’s wont to do. Hope just stares at him confusedly, like he’s got two heads. I swear she was under sedation for the band’s entire career. Then again, so was I.
I saw them live in 1994. So lovely and enveloping.
In tribute to the queen of narcotic soft rock:
The day before my birthday, 1994:

Man, I think you’re wrong about the sedation. You can’t play tambourine like that ‘under the influence’.
Not like the dude from DragonForce, who pounds Heineken in between shred fests.
Have you heard any of her stuff with The Warm Inventions? Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions is the full name of the act. It’s very special.
Come run away with me, Casey…
Forever, and ever, and ever.
I had the Warm Inventions disc for a time. I enjoyed it, for the most part. But I missed David Roback’s wall of elementary fuzz guitar. Dude wasn’t the greatest player, but he sure could create a mood.Neil, those gals scared the crap out of me then, and they still do.”Forgive me for saying so, Mr, Torrence, but perhaps Danny needs…correcting. My wife and daughters didn’t like the Overlook at first, so I…corrected them.”Or some such.
That voice. Those lips. The hair. Her killer stare. How can anyone not have a crush on Sandoval?
oh, man. I hear Fade Into You, and suddenly I’m in a very Reality-Bites-place. Why is Ethan Hawke such a jerk to Winona Ryder? And why won’t he shower? It’s not a happy place. And as for Hope being scared of Conan…imagine you’re a slightly strung out pixie. You’re tiny, like the size of a hobbit. And lumbering toward you is a GIANT LEPRECHAUN. Your eyes would widen a touch, too. If I tried, I could tie all this pixie, hobbit and leprechaun stuff back to Dragonforce, but it would all need a fiery dragon of death and destruction. I’m pretty not sure Andy Richter, circa ’94, can fill that slot.
Because I hate beautiful things and seek always to topple them, I was looking for a bad picture of Hope. I thought perhaps she wasn’t aging well or got fat or something.Alas, she’s still as beautiful as ever. Dammit.
BZ, if fanyone can tie Andy Richter to a D&D fantasyscape, it’s you.Give it up Molly, I tried too.
I’m sure Tenacious D would gladly jump in and tie all those things together. Now I’m laughing, thinking of how they’d probably jump in naked, out from the side hatch.
Oh, man. You add Jables and Kage, on top of Conan, and poor little Hope would have a very tiny and adorable pixie heart attack. And then Casey would cry. On a more Dragonforce related note: my coworker, a youngish fellow in a metal band here in NYC, just came into my cubical to chat, and we’re talking about our prospective weekends, and he said “Oh, yeah, and then on Monday, I’m seeing Dragonforce, which I’m totally stoked about…” No lie. That turned into a discussion on Fantasy Metal and I think we really scared the intern from Long Island whom I was training at the time. Anyway, evidence that Dragonforce is, indeed, something people ARE into.
That’s amazing. The fantsasy becomes reality!
