If you’ve ever rescued an orphaned mouse or bird, chances are you called Ellen Jareckie for help. For the past five years, the Shelburne artist has run a wildlife hotline (802-578-7168), instructing callers on how to care for an injured or orphaned creature, helping them find a local rehabber, and sometimes arranging transportation with Green Mountain Animal Defenders.

Ellen is also the creator of the popular House-Mouse Designs, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. She’s always had a love for mice, and she paints them in fanciful scenes that grace calendars, notepads and fridge magnets. Ellen also rehabilitates animals like house mice, rats, pigeons, sparrows and starlings. She shares her rehab tales on her Facebook page, where dozens of people leave appreciative comments and cheer on this Patron Saint of Injured and Orphaned Animals.
