Todd Hanley grows about 300 colorful varieties of daylilies in his hilltop Richmond garden. Most are hybrids that he created himself; 12 of those are registered with the American Daylily Society. For more than 20 years, Hanley has volunteered with Lyric Theatre, and he named some of his flowers using musical theater references: “No Day but Today” (from Rent), “Fields of Clover” (from Seussical) and “Ultra Clutch” (from Hairspray).

In the latest episode of “Stuck in Vermont,” Seven Days senior multimedia producer Eva Sollberger got a garden tour and learned how to cross-pollinate a few daylilies. 

Hanley opens his garden to the public every summer for Daylily Days. You can visit on July 24, 25 and 31, and August 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 382 Williams Hill Road in Richmond.
