New York City artist Ed Woodham is known for his provocative performances with a social-justice bent and a flair for the absurd. He’s the founder of Art in Odd Places, which has brought strange interventions to 14th Street in Manhattan for two decades. Since August 15, as an artist-in-residence at Cold Hollow Sculpture Park in Enosburg Falls, he’s been learning about the park’s neighbors: specifically cows and their farmers.
Both as himself and as a costumed character named CA$H COW, whom he describes as a “visionary outsider folk artist and international influencer,” he has visited local milk producers including the Choiniere Family Farm, a fifth-generation organic operation with pastured cows, and the milking barn at the Boucher Family Farm, both in Highgate Center.
On Saturday, August 29, Cold Hollow will host “Free Range,” a kind of “cow carnival,” as Woodham described it. CA$H COW will be making monoprints and sharing stories, photos and videos of cows and farmers. The event will feature a “cow lick” kissing booth, free advice, a photo booth, refreshments and games, all in celebration of bovines and their besties. Woodham said the project started out “with a sense of whimsy,” but his process relies on listening to locals describe what’s going on in their world. For Franklin County farmers, that’s a lot. Because of them, he said, “the project has developed much more depth than I even imagined.”
