Run, run, run as fast as you can;
You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerdead Man.
Actually, maybe you can. Gingerdead Men are not as fast on their feet as living Gingerbread Men, and these adorable corpses are available at the Vergennes Laundry through Thursday.
As you can see from the hanging skeleton, the Vergennes bakery is not your average patisserie. Yes, co-owners Julianne Jones and Didier Murat infuse their food and decor with a touch of humor and whimsy (check out the mounted deer head just feet away from the ultra-modern lamp — the bright, white space looks like France by way of Mars). But it’s the deadly serious care in creating classics that has commanded raves from the New York Times Magazine and Food and Wine.
Think of the hot chocolate (right) made from steamed milk that slowly melts three handmade crème fraîche truffles. Serious stuff.

I had the Celeriac soup and a baguette sandwich at the Laundry just last week and was pleased by the subtle flavors of both. Salt is something that you can add to taste, but not subtract. Also, I appreciate a bit of char from the wood burning oven – adds an interesting note to the baked goods. This place is top notch – and their bread is robust and outstanding.
I am a huge fan of the Laundry in Vergennes. Our family favorite is the canele. The pastry is delicious and dark and buttery goodness. Never have we had it with a burnt bottom. Though I will say that many Americans are not used to European pastries being so dark in color. When lots of butter is used (as in European pastries) the appearance of pastries is very dark – almost burnt in coloring. My favorite brioche made by Jeffery Hammelman from King Arthur Flour is super dark and when asked about the color – he educated us on this fact. This place is a gem and the coffee and pastries are divine! And that you didn’t mention that they serve Intelligentsia Coffee from Chicago is indeed a Halloween Horror.
