The fifth location of a regional restaurant chain called the Friendly Toast will open in late spring at 86 St. Paul Street in Burlington, according to co-owner Eric Goodwin. The restaurant will occupy the space that previously housed Bluebird Tavern and the Green Room.
The local Friendly Toast will join a group of restaurants that started about 18 years ago in Portsmouth, N.H. Until now, the expansion has been limited to Massachusetts, with locations in Boston, Cambridge and Burlington.
The Friendly Toast “serves up creative meals in a truly unique atmosphere and offers a fun and exciting dining experience morning, noon and night,” according to an email from the company.
The menu includes breakfast sandwiches, a variety of eggs Benedicts, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers such as nachos and Orleans fries (sweet potato fries with brown sugar and Tabasco). Also on offer are main courses such as vegan stir-fry and chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and greens.

This will shorten the line at Penny Cluse.
This place appears to be another overpriced breakfast joint with uninspired, also overpriced lunch options. Burlington will welcome you with open arms.
This isn’t a news article, or even a review. It’s an advertisement.
All the naysayers obviously have never been lucky enough to experience the amazing food or ambiance The Friendly Toast provides. Good food, not too expensive. Delicious drinks. And lots of variety with the menu. Im so excited!!
Bobos in Paradise
@ASLATER Another over priced / uninspired breakfast place in Burlington?? We only have 1 top tier places in the whole city in Penny Cluse (and Sneakers in Winooski of course) and both of them have great value for their quality! Do they call you internet trolls because as a person you are small ??
Bring on The Friendly Toast! Us Burlingtonians welcome you!
Nic Lawrence, sorry, but that Penny Cluse is good is not a “fact,” it’s your opinion. Another example of an opinion is that I think Penny Cluse is poor quality and overhyped and is the least interesting of Burlington’s breakfast joints. An example of a fact: Burlington has several breakfast/brunch eateries, including Magnolia’s, Mirabelle’s, Lunigs, and the Spot.
I certainly dont think think Penny Cluse is poor quality or over hyped at all. One of the best eateries in the whole state of Vermont easily. Every time I go there is have amazing fresh tasting food that is beautifully plated for such a great value! You just need to know how to order. Sometimes I go there and order a half order of the garlicky sausage that come with a heap of their signature potato salad and picked beets and Ill get a half order of sleepy Nates Biscuits and herb gravy and boh of those plates of food come out to around $10 bucks!! The warm orzo salad is also to die for. Magnolias , Mirabelles, Lunigs and the Spot are all good too. How lucky we are live in such a great city! I certainly welcome another choice though in the friendly toast. So glad that space is getting filled. I look forward to it. Have a great day janefonda
I never realized we had so many negative attitudes in Burlington especially concerning a fun restaurant. I have been a fan of the Portsmouth Friendly Toast for years and I have never found it over priced nor is it even similar to Penny Cluse!
What is wrong with you people?
Its a good atmosphere restaurant that serves good food and has always had a great staff…come on people! Put your negative energy elsewhere like standing up to and speaking out against this ridiculous President!
I am glad the Friendly Toast is coming to Burlington. My husband and I have eaten at the Portsmouth spot several times. There are a lot of vegan choices which is something Penny Cluse is lacking. We like Penny Cluse but it seems to be more on the meat wagon then in years past. We look forward to eating somewhere with more choices for everyone.
This was Not what i was expecting. Feels like Denny’s downtown.
