Jewelry maker Jennifer Kahn has been Art Hopping for 25 years, including as part of her own wedding festivities in 2013. She showed her work in several different spaces before opening her studio and store on the second floor of the Soda Plant seven years ago. Visitors might recognize her hammered, brassy earrings and pendants with chunky gemstones from boutiques and stylish people’s bodies around the state. The pieces stand out for their ancient vibes, with a timeless feel that’s both elevated and earthy. Stop by to meet Kahn and her brother Jason Steinberg, who has managed the studio since 2020, and see works in progress or commission special items. The studio offers 20 percent off during Art Hop. It’s one of Kahn’s favorite times of year, she said: She likes to watch the South End come to life.

Amalgamated Culture Works

Head to this artsy industrial space to witness art in action. The custom screen printer, in business since 1981, offers racks of T-shirts, hoodies and prints with spiffy designs, many created in-house. During Art Hop, visitors can try their hand at the presses with a selection of demo stencils; you can even give it a go with your own garment. Scared to get inked? You’re welcome to watch.

AO Glass

Despite kilns that can hit 2,050 degrees, AO Glass’ 10,000-square-foot warehouse is one of the coolest places in the South End. The company turns molten glass into everything from tableware to custom installations with major international artists, such as Maya Lin and Christine Sun Kim. Visitors are invited for hands-on classes and, during Art Hop, glassblowing demonstrations.

Conant Metal & Light

Steve Conant was one of the original movers and shakers behind the Art Hop and the South End’s revitalization. Back in the 1980s, he touted his studio as “the best brass shop in the world.” Today, Conant Metal & Light creates custom fixtures for high-end hotels and residential renos alike. Visit the workshop to see reproduction antique hardware, luminous glass orbs and quirky little lamps.

Dostie Bros. Frame Shop

If you’re looking for Dostie Bros., keep an eye out for a sign boasting “World’s Best Art.” That’s not “World’s Greatest Art,” Alex Dostie was quick to clarify — just some he and his brother, Jeremy, like a lot. This Art Hop marks the 15th anniversary of the custom frame shop, which has become the go-to choice for South End artists. New collectors, take note.

Rackk & Ruin

Behind the Soda Plant’s iconic rhinoceros sculpture, jewelers Molly Conant, Miki Sakaguchi and Amelia Szosz handcraft classic pieces in precious metals. Alongside a curated selection of vintage clothes, housewares and art by other area makers, their necklaces, bracelets and earrings stand out as sophisticated and subtle — airy elegance that’s equally suited to a wedding or a white T-shirt.

Sterling Furniture Works

This woodshop’s garage-door entrance always draws the Art Hop crowd. But most of what craftsmen Marc Leone and Noah Burton do — making custom furniture by hand from high-quality lumber — isn’t on view. For Art Hop, they build experimental pieces as well as small items such as cutting boards. If you’re looking for a funky angled bookcase or a bar made from exotic wood scraps, stop in. For tamer tables, just ask.
