John Gammon Simson lived his life with curiosity, a deep devotion to community and, above all, immense love for his family. A master planner at heart, John brought care, wisdom and an infectious enthusiasm to every pursuit — whether solving complex regional challenges, researching travel adventures, refinishing antique furniture or planting his yearly vegetable garden.
Born in Boston, John’s life was defined by service and adventure. Eventually an Army captain in the Military Police, his service took him to Korea and later Kagnew Station in Asmara, Ethiopia. It was there in 1966 that he met the love of his life, Nancy Barrows. Married just six months later, they shared nearly 60 wonderful years of travel, laughter and devotion, building a beautiful life together in Vermont.
After earning his master’s in public administration from George Washington University, John served as Vermont’s state planning director under governor Richard Snelling before starting a successful financial planning practice. Passionate about community, he devoted over four decades to volunteering across Chittenden County, leading initiatives for affordable housing, the local library and advising on public policy.
Whether sharing his love for history and birding or cheering faithfully for Boston sports, John’s curiosity and willingness to engage stood out. He passed away peacefully surrounded by love at McClure Miller Respite House, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service and warmth.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; daughters, Carrie Simson and Sarah Simson (Julian Bill); grandchildren, Oscar, Hollis and Rosie; and brother-in-law, Donald Barrows.
