John Phillip “Sam” Kinghorn, 75, of Essex, Vt., died at his home on June 14, 2026.
Born on March 29, 1951, in Morristown, N.J., Sam was the son of John Henry and Mary Kinghorn (née Crane). While his early childhood was spent in Mountain Lakes, N.J., Sam spent the vast majority of his life living in Vermont in Cornwall, Burlington and finally for over 43 years in Essex.
Sam was a devoted writer who journaled daily for most of his adult life. His passion for craftsmanship, history and hospitality was evident in the beautiful, unique home that he and Fran curated to share with many friends and family. Whether around a cozy fireplace or a warmly lit porch, guests frequently enjoyed hearing Sam reminisce and tell stories of his past. Sam was generous, kindhearted and empathetic to all creatures, great and small.
Sam is survived by his wife, Frances Kinghorn (née Alster); daughter and son-in-law, Zack and Emily Clark, of Burlington, Vt.; and his son, John Maxfield Kinghorn, of Williamsburg, Va. His grandchildren, Fox and Luna Clark, affectionately called him “Bumpa.” Sam also leaves behind his best friend, Tim “Chico” Taylor, of South Burlington, Vt.; nine nieces and nephews; and many great and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Sam was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Work, and her husband, Bertram Work.
Visiting hours are on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a service at Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home in Essex Junction.
