Spencer Philip Clark passed away peacefully at his home in South Burlington, leaving behind a life marked by intelligence, kindness, curiosity, uncanny wit and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
Spencer was the beloved son of Amelia Clark of Essex, Vt., and the late Bruce Edward Clark. He is survived by his mother, Amelia; his beloved son, Asa; and Mary-Lynn Walkonen of Huntington, Vt., with whom he shared his greatest joy — their son. He is also survived by his sister Leslie Leedy and her husband, Steve, of Bakersfield, Vt; his sister Jeanne Christiano and her husband, Jon, of Hampstead, N.C.; and his brother, Mitchell Clark, and his wife, Dana, of Hampstead, N.C. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A proud graduate of the University of Vermont, Spencer graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His exceptional intellect also earned him membership in Mensa. He possessed a razor-sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor, delivering quick observations, clever remarks and perfectly timed jokes with ease.
Spencer worked at Champlain College as an HVAC technician, where his knowledge, practical skills and willingness to help others made him someone people could depend on. He could bring order to a stubborn system, warmth to a cold room and laughter to nearly any situation — sometimes all before lunch.
Spencer found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a phenomenal cook who loved preparing meals and sharing them with family and friends. He enjoyed trips to the Maine coast, cheering on the Boston Red Sox, skiing, boating and swimming.
Above all, Spencer was a proud and devoted father to Asa. The two shared a similar sense of humor, their own inside jokes and a love of simply spending time together. Some of Asa’s favorite times with his dad were playing video games, going for walks, laughing together and enjoying each other’s company. Their relationship was built not only around the things they did together but also around the humor and connection they shared.
Spencer leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, knowledge, humor and friendship that will continue through all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He will be deeply missed, forever remembered and never replaced.
A celebration of Spencer’s life will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, 3 to 5 p.m., at Holy Family Parish Hall, 28 Lincoln St., Essex Junction, VT 05452
In lieu of flowers or gifts, those wishing to honor Spencer’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to one of Champlain College’s scholarship funds, supporting students at a place that meant so much to Spencer and continues to play an important role in his son’s life.
