Steven J. Malaney Sr., of North Ferrisburgh, Vt., died on September 11, 2026. Born on June 12, 1942, in Burlington, Vt., he is the son of the late Curtis “Bill” Malaney and Florence “Eurma” (Ellnor) Malaney.
A lifelong Vermonter, Steve graduated from Burlington High School, served in the Vermont Army National Guard and worked as a carpenter, eventually starting his own business, Malaney Construction.
A talented builder, he shared his knowledge with hundreds of students as the first building trades teacher at Burlington High School, from 1970 to 1990. Many of Steve’s students followed in his footsteps, becoming successful builders and tradesmen. He retired from teaching after 20 years to focus on his own business.
Steve’s passion for restoring old historical homes dovetailed with a lifelong interest in early Vermont history and collecting antiques. In 2017, his experience collecting and dealing antiques earned him a featured guest appearance on the TV show “American Pickers.”
For anyone who knew him, Steve’s love of his home and his collection of antiques was clear. Over the years, he made many friends and engaged in spirited conversations, sharing his great appreciation of history.
Steve leaves behind his son, Steven Malaney Jr.; daughter, Krista Malaney, of North Ferrisburgh; grandson, Aaron Malaney; daughter-in-law, Victoria; great-grandson, Elijah; and granddaughter, Isabella Mary, of North Ferrisburgh. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Patricia; siblings Patrick, Marilyn and Kathleen; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Dolores, Michelle and Rosemary.
Steve was a proud Vermonter to the very end. He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, 2 p.m., at the North Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church. In honor of Steve, send charitable donations to the Rogers & Hazard Relief Society of Ferrisburgh and/or Vergennes Rescue.
