Scot MacMillan, 49, left this world to journey on to the next on October 6, 2021. He is and forever will be our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. We are bereft without him.

He did all the usual stuff: He grew up in Groton, Mass., and graduated from Long Island University C.W. Post. He had a career in marketing.

More importantly, he was a man of generous love, compassion, hilarity and true kindness. He gathered people close and created a dynamic family of friends whom he united with his passion for music. DJ SMAC’s love of music centered on Phish, all the funk and dance parties. He relished traveling and adventuring. Scot found fun absolutely everywhere.

He was the most hilarious uncle to his nephews and niece. He enjoyed entertaining them and did so with gusto.

He adored his parents. He tended lovingly, with a hint of humor, to his dad during Joe’s illness and final days.

Scot loved to laugh and made people laugh until there were tears. His wit was unparalleled.

He leaves behind his mother, Mary; his sister Beth and her husband, Dan; his sister Julie and her husband, Mike; his nephews, Aidan and Makai; and his niece, Hollis. He also leaves his legacy of enduring and powerful friendship with so many, including the Flock, the LIU crew, the Cape Cod crew, the Vermont PBS crew and so many more. He felt your love in this last year. And, lastly, he leaves his cat, Monk.

A celebration of his fantastic life is planned for the spring of 2022.

In lieu of flowers, Scot asked that donations be made to the Burlington, Vt., food bank and Meals on Wheels.

  1. I didn’t have the good fortune of knowing Scot personally, but based on the friends he kept, I can say for certain that I wish I had. Every story I’ve ever heard about him is filled with laughter and love. I know he will be missed.

  2. Scot you were the best of the best human being. You’d do anything to get your friends, or even complete strangers, to dance a little longer. I once witnessed you offer to pay for someone’s plane ticket back to VT if they stayed and saw just one more show. You had just met them earlier that night. That’s the kind of person you were, you’d remove any obstacle for anyone you crossed paths with in the pursuit of joy and freedom through music. There are no words to express the gratitude I have for all you’ve given me. You helped me work on my mental health, encouraged me to always keep making art, and pulled me into a friend group that transformed VT into my home. I could spend a lifetime thanking you and trying to repay you and inevitably come up short. I love you, I’ll always miss you.

  3. “The Flock” is Scot’s Vermont family. We are a group of flatlanders who have made Vermont our home for over 15 years. None of us had family nearby and we came to become a very close-knit family of friends. The Flock has grown over the years to now include many fledglings and Scot filled the role of the goofy fun Uncle for all our kids. From trying to telling each other “Hush up” first when they saw each other to always bringing them a special treat or present, Scot loved the kids like they were all his nieces and nephews. Scot was always the one to remember a birthday or a special occasion. He was our own personal dj with knack for always playing the perfect song whether it was at a late nigh post Phish party or afternoon BBQ in Westford. He was one of the most compassionate thoughtful friends that I’ve ever had the pleasure of having in my life. Bottom-line, he was the kind of friend that every person hopes they can have. Life will never the same without him and he will never be forgotten. I already miss my brother immensely, but I know he is at peace probably having a beer with his dad Joe listening to a Van Morrison tune. God speed my friend.
