Last week’s live music highlights from photographer Luke Awtry

Helen Sung and the University of Vermont Jazz Ensemble with guest Ray Vega at the University of Vermont Recital Hall in Burlington, Friday, November 8
Ray Vega sure knows how to make an entrance. The local jazz great’s trumpet was heard long before he was seen as he tooted his way to the front of the stage, emerging from behind the University of Vermont Jazz Ensemble, director Alex Stewart and the acclaimed pianist Helen Sung. I don’t think it’s possible to steal a show from Sung, but she knows how to share the spotlight; Vega had his moment and more. The top row of risers was filled with the trumpet and flugelhorn section. To the delight of the crowd, Vega stopped the show and went down the line, not accepting less than the most enthusiastic call and response from each player. I imagine this mirrors what it is like to study under him — fun, rewarding and endlessly challenging. Sung brought it all back, yelling a playful count off. The full band hit right on the one and knew just how to take it home.
