A group of young Vermonters and gun control activists gathered at the Vermont Statehouse Tuesday morning to call on lawmakers to pass several proposed gun-control bills.
The demonstration came in reaction to a school shooting in Florida last week and an incident in Fair Haven in which authorities stopped a would-be school shooter before any violence took place.
“Fix this before my kid is texting me from under a desk,” read a sign held by a demonstrator standing in a light rain on the Statehouse steps.
The demonstration was organized by GunSense Vermont, but the presence of students from the Vermont Commons School brought the message home. The students called on lawmakers to pass new gun laws before more shootings take place.
In a slow, quiet procession, the students wove through the halls of the Statehouse bearing signs that read “protect kids not guns” and “right to own a gun or surviving school.”
Demonstrators said they were hoping to make gun control an unavoidable topic in the Statehouse. Three gun control bills are currently in the Senate Judiciary Committee. One would mandate background checks for all gun sales. Another would allow police to confiscate weapons when they make an arrest for domestic violence. A third bill would create a court process allowing police to confiscate guns from those ruled to be an “extreme risk.”
The universal background check bill has been stuck in the committee since last year and hasn’t moved because three of the panel’s five members oppose it. (A 2015 attempt to mandate background checks was also thwarted by a 3-2 vote in the same committee.) The current bill’s lead sponsor, Sen. Phil Baruth (D/P-Chittenden), said last week that the Senate should be ashamed for doing “jack shit” about gun violence.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger attended the Tuesday morning rally in Montpelier and said student involvement at the event gave him hope that the years-long political deadlock around gun control would come to an end.
“It is very hopeful to be standing with so many of you this morning,” Weinberger said to a crowd in front of the Statehouse, “and particularly to be standing with our kids and children who have been so eloquent on this issue. That, I hope, is what will finally change this terrible dynamic and lead to action.”
Weinberger joined other advocates in calling for statewide, mandatory universal background checks, as he has since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012.
“The rest of the world simply does not tolerate this kind of massacre of its children,” Weinberger said. “The United States and the state of Vermont should not either.”
But if lawmakers don’t pass any statewide measures, Weinberger said it’s unacceptable to block local gun control. Burlington voters in 2014 approved a measure banning guns in bars, requiring residents to lock them up when not in use and allowing cops to confiscate them from those accused of domestic violence. The legislature has so far refused to approve the necessary changes to the city’s charter, blocking enactment of the proposed policies.

“If Montpelier can’t or won’t get the job done, at the very least this Statehouse should allow cities and towns that want to move forward on their own to protect our children, our domestic violence victims and our police officers,” the mayor said. “We should be allowed to take responsibility and do that as our own communities.”
Weinberger says a statewide policy would make more sense, but he’s already hedging his bets.
“I have begun conversations about whether we could bring [the charter changes] back this year,” he said in an interview with Seven Days Monday. “I do plan to spend some time on this.”

Have to wonder if the founders would feel the same way about the 2nd amendment?
It’s sad that the students aren’t taught the Constitution in school. If they were they would know that the 2nd amendment is absolute. If they want to change it they must call for a constitutional convention and get it changed legally.
And any elected official whether they agree or not they have taken an oath to defend and protect the Constitution. To vote to impose any gun law without a constitutional amendment is a violation of their oath.
Penelope I agree with some of your points but you seem to be a little misinformed about our nations current gun laws. 1st background checks are already mandatory in all 50 states. Unfortunately mental heath records are off limits due to HIPA not by any actions of the NRA. That does need to change mentally ill people do not need access to firearms of any sort. 2nd outlawing guns is not the answer to protecting kids from harm. In todays world the internet does more harm to kids than any gun by itself has ever done. Kids are desensitized when they spend their time watching violent videos and playing war games on their xboxes instead of playing sports and learning teamwork and respect for others. 3rd gun violence is not a political problem and can not be blamed on republicans or democrats. It is a social problem that needs to be addressed by everyone. Im sorry you feel that I might be your enemy because I support the 2nd amendment but I promise you Im not. The vast majority of kids at the Vermont Commons School are from Vermont itself. Listed on their website, they note that they have students from the following areas: VT, Keene Valley and Plattsburgh, NY. Also, what does someone’s geographical location have to do with this? The tuition these kids pay have roughly the same economic impact, if not more, than the average individual that lives here. Why don’t they get a say in the future of this state?
Also, people should freak out when there’s a shark attack every single day just about. Look at Sydney Bay when it comes to sharks – people don’t swim because it’s dangerous.
So what have these school kids learned from all this? So far it looks like their lesson is this;

First of all Citizen, it’s HIPAA. Second of all, HIPAA was modified by an executive rule that allowed for the inclusion of mental health (involuntary institutionalization) in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. There is no reason why HIPAA cannot be further modified to allow for the inclusion of more information concerning someone’s mental health status. Individuals taking antipsychotics probably should not be allowed to have a gun. Individuals that exhibit suicidality probably should not be allowed to have a gun. HOWEVER, no such rule can allow for the widespread reporting of mental health status – only an act of Congress would do such a thing. Currently there are bills that have been introduced in both chambers, however, they continually languish in committee. Why? The NRA and the gun lobby. They feel that any sensible action in terms of guns represent an erosion of gun rights.
Lastly, the Second Amendment does NOT clearly state that individuals have the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment reads “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The last time I had a grammar lesson was a decade ago, but something tells me the clauses in that text make interpretation a little dubious and not so clear cut.
Bradd other countries dont claim to be the home of the free and the birthplace of the constitution that states the people have the right and responsibility to own firearms. So as I stated earlier treat mental illness and stop the violence. And I promise you the framers of the constitution would still be pro 2nd amendment because they understood history and knew that in order for the government to be for the people the people needed to keep the government in check and that means having firearms. If you dont like our countries laws than feel free to move to one of the countries you are referring too. But dont cry when you loose your freedom.

Thommy boy the last 14 words of the amendment state that the peoples right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Your pic makes you look like a doctor so Im guessing you are smart enough to understand that those words in that document give the people the right to own firearms and the government can not infringe on that right. I know plenty of people that hunt with AR-15s. If you knew anything about guns you would know that ARs are semi auto and that means one pull of the trigger one bullet. So yes plenty of meat left as long as you know how to shoot. Practice makes perfect Bradd.
Bradd I know you know a AR-15 is not an automatic weapon it is a semi auto which means that only one bullet leaves the chamber when you pull the trigger. No real hunter would ever use a machine gun to hunt but plenty of experienced hunter would use a AR-15. They are straight shooting and light weight. They are no different than the hunting rifle I use every November. You can blame the gun all want I guess it is easier than holding people responsible for their deranged actions.

Why hasn’t anyone put the blame where it belongs THE SHOOTER !!!! I have even seen on the news where they are feeling sorry for him. That he is misunderstood, poor boy parents are dead, no one likes him, that everyone is blaming him..that the gun is to blame.. I am a gun owner and hunter. I am all for full background checks when buying a gun at a gun dealer or at a gun show. I don’t know all of the gun control proposal that these people would like to see become law. Hypothtically, lets say that all the controls being proposed that funding for enforcement is available, became law. We would then be able to have real data that could be analyzed to see what effect the new laws woul have on gun violence. I have my opinion about what the results would be, as others have their opinions. But only solid statistics can answer the question.

There’s no need to interpret my educational background and somehow appeal to it.
There exists three commas, and thus four sections, within the Amendment, or, alternatively one comma. Why is there a debate over whether or not there are one or three commas? One version was passed by Congress and the other ratified by the States. Depending on which version you choose to accept, “a well regulated Militia” is either a separate clause to “right to bear arms” or is a dominant clause to it. Therefore, one can interpret the amendment as allowing for solely an armed national guard, or an armed national guard and an armed populace. Complicating this matter, the definition of “arms” is not terribly struct. It simply does not allow for the application of scrutiny. For example, does it allow for the possession of nuclear arms? Under your strict interpretation of the amendment, it indeed does allow for that.

Unfortunately private schools do not have to report on the make up of their student body, however, their FAQ does list a number of towns from which students come from. Furthermore, I hope you’re aware that sticker price does not actually equate to actual price when it comes to education. The cost of education is very much akin to car buying now. Furthermore, what does it matter if they’re from out of state? Their opinion somehow matters less? In your mind does someone need to be a seventh generation Vermonter to actually have a valid opinion?
In terms of the mental health bit and gun buying – are you sure? Most evidence associates a decrease in suicides caused by guns when guns are restricted, either temporarily or permanently. Look no further than studies in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia or Australia. Also, I wasn’t referring to Sydney Bay in terms of sharks being perpetrators of crimes or being cognizant of the English language. I was referring to it in the context of how a civilized society deals with relative dangers. If guns are the major driver of school shootings and there exists data in other countries that suggest that regulating guns would be a negative pressure in terms of the rate of school shootings… then maybe we should regulate guns?
Thommy you state that suicides by guns goes down when guns are restricted but does the suicide rate over all go down or do the mentally ill just find a different pathway (i.e rope or a knife or a car that is driven into on coming traffic) to heaven. Are we suppose to restrict anything that could be used to cause harm? Thommy the point is that your stance on restricting guns does nothing to combat the mental illness that is the core of the problems. I propose as a law abiding gun owner a tax of 1% on all ammunition and 2% on all firearms to go into a fund to be used to treat mental illness. Sydney bay recognizes an out of control danger that they have no way of dealing with beyond taking protective measures to ensure that danger does not get anywhere near the general public. They take an ACTIVE approach to safety. You are seeking another PASSIVE approach where you feel passing even more laws will somehow protect our unprotected schools. Murder has been illegal for quite some time yet it continues to take place in areas where security is lacking. Do you seriously think that is a sane approach to dealing with “relative dangers”?

Citizen, there are no “god given rights” at all, only those written by the men who wrote the Bill of Rights. Which, you’ll recall, wasn’t part of the Constitution in the first place.

Regarding the sharks – they can’t read, so a sign would probably not be useful. The signs in the schools, on the other hand, are for human beings, many of whom can read. Just like the other laws in our country, these guidelines are written out and then people are expected to follow them or pay the consequences. Unlike other laws, like those against jay-walking or poaching, one person breaking the law can cause a lot of dead children.
Finally, abortion doesn’t really have anything to do with murdering children – it’s the removal of a number of non-sentient, unfeeling cells. Like the ones that lead one to believe that there shouldn’t be stricter gun control measures, apparently.

The Bath School disaster is tragic and interesting – I didn’t know about it. Surely, though, you understand that rather than looking at century old incidents, we should be considering how best to stop modern ones. But the rest of what you wrote is exactly what I’m saying. The laws will not stop all criminals, but neither do any laws. People have the opportunity to act in whatever way they want. They can sell guns illegally, buy guns illegally, use guns illegally, etc., and this will not change with harsher restrictions or penalties. But whatever mental calculus they do to weigh the pros and cons will change because the cons go way up, and actually accessing a weapon becomes more difficult in the first place.
Whether or not a bunch of dudes wrote there are god given rights doesn’t indicate that there actually are. (Hint: there aren’t.)
the lessons of the Bath school disastor prove true today- You can only protect a school by taking physical control of it away from anyone who wishes to enter who does not belong there. Had the Bath school been a secure facility- the disaster never would have occured. Ditto for pretty much every attack since. Heck- in Virginia Tech the shooter took advantage of the lack of security by creating his own- chaining everyone inside the building.
If if you have no buisiness being on school property you should be denied access to it. I hate to say it but if we really want to keep schools safe we are going to have to take a prison like mentality when it comes to security. Starting with a secure fence to ensure that their is restricted access limiting anyone entry beyond the manned gates that would provide access.

Are we just all glancing over the fact that Australia had a buyback program for guns and they haven’t had any gun related mass murders since? There’s also been a decrease in the over all homicide rate in Australia, with many statisticians claiming that the buyback program was beneficial.
Claiming that gun laws are ineffective, while true to a degree, fails to acknowledge that there are benefits to them. Anyone can drive drunk, but our systems in place have largely been a beneficial deterent to this risky behavior. Because it still happens, should we dismantle those systems? With the pro-gun lobby’s logic we should, because their logic hinges on absolutes.

I’d would like you to know @snowycreek that I attend the school and before you say a single thing you should do some research about anything. The school is an amazing environment with smart students and teachers and a great community. We don’t have a gun problem we have a behavioral problem and a drug problem that is driving these incidents that used to be so rare.
And I watch these children behave miserably in front of those they should be respecting while asking them to change laws.
I watched as these children called a speaker on CNN the c word and threatened to burn this lady while she was telling the story of a woman who protected herself with a gun from being raped.
I watched these poor brainwashed children berate Gun Owners of America and the NRA
Until we become parents again with rights to punish our children when we feel they have done something wrong and teach them morality we have failed our children.
Until we have school boards and schools where we teach our children the whole truth and we take hate of a president we don’t agree with out of those schools we have failed our children
Until we stop teachers from pushing their agenda on the fragile minds of the children and our schools we have failed our children
Oh I agree children should have a say but not until they know both sides of the story..
