For the first time, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Thursday that President Donald Trump should consider resigning the nation’s top office.

Speaking on “CBS This Morning,” Sanders addressed allegations of sexual misconduct against Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. He noted that Trump had faced similar accusations during the 2016 presidential campaign and referred to a 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about groping women.

“We have a president of the United States who acknowledged on a tape widely seen all over this country that he’s assaulted women, so I would hope that maybe the president of the United States might pay attention [to] what’s going on and also think about resigning,” Sanders said.

Later Thursday, the Vermont senator and 2016 presidential candidate restated his call on Twitter:

According to Daniel McLean, a spokesperson for Sanders, the senator had not previously called on Trump to consider resigning.

  7. Wait, because Bernie calls out a harasser he’s somehow as bad? These comments against Bernie are ridiculous. The fact that he is a democratic socialist is absolutely irrelevant to the issue he is addressing, one of great importance to our society. He is also pointing out a distressing trend: Democrats are resigning when their pecadilloes are discovered, when actual assaulters continue to run and sit in office on the Republican side. Both Conyers and Franken have done the right thing. Will the Republicans? And yes, I know about the Republican guy who tried to get his female staff to be surrogate mothers. That’s just appalling under any circumstances.

  8. I think the citizens should have a say in if Trump should be impeached, I for 1 thinks he should be but congress only takes it upon themselves to decide this.. It’s the outdated electoral college that voted him in so it should be up to us to vote him out!

    Where do the Bernie haters come from on this site I doubt many are voters in VT.
    At least two commenters so far bringing up Bernies nearly 50 year old essay on rape. Please. nice try but try for a more recent example – how about something in the last generation.
    I am surprised some of you Bernie haters havent found a way to start moaning about his lakefront weekend place your favorite topic. As if a man who has made well over 100K a year for nearly 30 years should not be able to afford a 600K weekend house.
    I am sure some hater can find a way to combine the 50 year old rape essay + jane’s B College deal and the lake front house – please try – you can do it.
    What you haters cant get over is that Bernie has more integrity in his left nut than trump and his thieving criminal family combined.
