The founder of Black Lives Matter Vermont is on track for a seat on the Winooski City Council.
Ebony Nyoni submitted the necessary signatures to meet the filing requirements, Winooski city manager Jessie Baker confirmed Wednesday morning, ahead of a 4:30 p.m. deadline.
The racial justice activist is unopposed for a seat on the council that serves the 7,100-person city adjacent to Burlington.
Nyoni filed a petition to run Monday but was nine names short of the 50 registered voters needed. Her campaign submitted an additional 17 signatures Wednesday morning; 15 were validated as registered Winooski voters, Baker said.
The election takes place on Town Meeting Day, March 6.
Correction, February 1, 2018: At least one African American has previously held a seat on the Winooski City Council: Nicodemus McCollum served from 1970 to 1972. A previous version of this story contained an error.

Go Ebony Nyoni, go!
I hope she wins!
oh brother!!!!!!
There is incorrect information in this article. Nicholas McColumn , an African American , served on The Winooski City Council att some point in the 70s or 80s. My family and his lived on Lafountain Street and I went to High Scholl with his step son John.
Yes Donna. We get it, you’re racist.
The City of Winooski would like to thank Molly Walsh and Seven Days for this story! We did, however, provide Molly with some incorrect information. We believe that Nicodemus “Nickie” McCollum III was the first African American Winooski City Councilor who served from 1970 – 1972. Nickie (as he was known) graduated from Winooski High School and lived here for many years. His daughter, Bea McCollum, was kind enough to provide us with a photo, which you can see by following this link: http://bit.ly/2DT6kSR
Skolochenko, people like you have basically reduced the word “racist” to a meaningless insult.
it would be racist to not vote for her
The organization she heads is incorporated as a 501(c)3. The determination letter she received from the Secretary of State very clearly states that the organization cannot participate in political activity.
I am so tried hearing about color of skin and gender.
How about the best person for the job get the position.
I do not care what you look like, all I want to know are you qualified?
And we wonder why there is so much hate. How about we all get along, no matter color or gender.
I personally find BLM racist against any one of any other color but black
Is there enogh white guilt in Winooski to get her elected?
