Former Vermont governor Howard Dean has bowed out of the race for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee, The Hill reported on Friday afternoon.
His departure leaves three candidates in the race to fill the post, which opens up in March 2017 when interim chair Donna Brazile’s term expires.
The 67-year-old Dean, who served as the DNC chair from 2005 to 2009, first announced his intention to run last month.
The likely frontrunner for the position is Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), who has the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Dean announced his decision Friday in a video played at a conference of state Democratic party chairs. He said that “he would step aside to allow for a new face to lead the party as it seeks to rebuild,” The Hill reported.

Howard decided to “step aside” when he realized he didn’t have (and wasn’t going to have) enough support to win.
Dean is a rat trying to flee the sinking ship known as the S.S Democratic Party.
Dean is part of the reason the SS Democratic Party is sinking.
“Dean is part of the reason the SS Democratic Party is sinking.”
So the Dems lost a presidential election after holding the Presidency for two consecutive terms.
Care to explain why that means that “Democratic Party is sinking”?
And care to explain why it’s Dean’s fault?
I was using citizen’s words so I’ll defer to him on the sinking ship analogy. The Dems lost an election mainly because they failed to listen to their constituents. Dean was a part of that.
“The Dems lost an election mainly because they failed to listen to their constituents. Dean was a part of that.”
Not a very responsive or insightful answer. Or a correct one. Hillary got millions more primary votes than Bernie. So I guess you’re wrong: in nominating Hillary the Party listened to their constituents.
With a less than equal election where Dean was one of the superdelegates who helped make it less than equal.
Howard’s 50-state strategy was sorely missed over the years since his leaving this post. I love Obama, but his decision not to support Dean or enlist him in his cabinet really rankles me; we lost the man who knew how to fight the good fight, and gained the woman who did not know how to run the DNC. I like Wasserman-Schultz, don’t get me wrong; but her leadership was not what Howard’s was, when he was chair.
The Dems. Not only lost the White House they also lost the house and Senate so I think that defines sinking ship. I’m surprised you missed that knowyourassumptions. The reason they lost are countless so here are the big ones:1. Very flawed canidate 2. Not listing to the people 3. Selling a bunch of lies for the past eight years. I could go on all day but I have things to do and unlike the sore losers I’m busy thinking about a brighter future for America just like our Great president elect Donald Trump.
Congressman Keith Ellison is a dream candidate IF you are a republican . He is however politically correct so I guess that’s more important . Hello political oblivion .
