i went to hear brian wilson and his band perform smile last weekend in saratoga springs. it was a really lovely concert. the band was really great, super tight, and its amazing how they can cover all the parts and really recreate the records well. brian only played piano maybe once or twice for the whole show and bass on one tune. but his voice sounded great and he was in really good spirits. he was even making very intense hand gestures during the songs and getting into it. i also saw the ‘pet sounds’ tour but it was much earlier on in that tour. i liked the ‘smile’ show quite a bit more. i was also surprised that during the first set, they stayed away from the beach boys hits and played a lot of great and obscure songs from the beach boys records from the late 60’s / early 70’s (i.e. 20/20, sunflower, surf’s up, wild honey, holland, etc). all in all, a good show. my only complaint is that they were charging $35 for a brian wilson t-shirt!!!! that is unbelievable. especially after paying $60 for a ticket for the show. oh well… have fun casey and im looking forward to the article on brian.
