The Town of Bolton has adopted an updated Litter Ordinance. The ordinance establishes requirements concerning litter on public and private property and provides procedures for enforcement, including notices, penalties, and other enforcement measures authorized by Vermont law. The updated ordinance also clarifies the roles and authority of municipal officials responsible for enforcement while maintaining the Town’s existing penalty structure.

RIGHT TO PETITION FOR A TOWN-WIDE VOTE
Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1973, voters of the Town of Bolton have the right to petition for a vote to disapprove the ordinance. A petition must be signed by not less than five percent of the qualified voters of the municipality and submitted in accordance with the requirements of Vermont law. If a valid petition is submitted within the statutory period, the question of whether to disapprove the ordinance shall be submitted to the voters at an annual or special meeting as provided by law.
