It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Gene Smith Parent, lifelong Vermonter, who left us on January 5, 2026, at the age of 87. Born in Burlington on February 17, 1938, and raised in Richmond, Gene was the son of Kedrick and Gladys Smith Parent. He was a graduate of Richmond High School and the University of Vermont, class of 1960.

He married Evangeline Marion Howe on June 12, 1965, in Northfield, and they made their home in Brookfield, welcoming two children, James and Sera. Gene was a deeply patient, kind and loving father who always took time to be with them. He and Evangeline celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2025.

Gene possessed many talents and passions. An avid gardener and gifted artist, he captured the beauty of Vermont landscapes and people in watercolor, pastel, oil and pen. He received many awards for his artwork, which was on display in the Upper Valley, Stowe and other locations in central Vermont.

His professional life was devoted to the Small Business Administration in Montpelier, where he was highly regarded for his interpersonal skills and financial expertise. Following retirement, he enjoyed working at the Porter Music Box Shop in Randolph, conversing with visitors from all over the world. Gene was a licensed pilot who also possessed a deep love for music and languages, as well as for his community. He lived out this dedication through his involvement with the Shriners Club, Elks Lodge, Masonic Temple, Brookfield Community Singers and the Barre Paletteers.

He is survived by his wife, Evangeline, and his children, James Howe Parent and Sera Anderson, as well as grandchildren Asa, Iris and Caden Anderson. He was predeceased by his mother and father; brother, Cedric; and children Mary and Jon.

Those who knew Gene will remember his warmth, sense of humor and deep devotion to his family. He left behind a legacy of kindness, love and loyalty, as he touched the lives of many who knew him.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, 1 p.m., at the Northfield United Methodist Parish, 152 S. Main St., Northfield, VT 05663, with refreshments to follow. Family and friends are invited to attend. Private burial services were held at an earlier date.

In honor of Gene’s memory, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter, 75 Talcott Rd., Suite 40, Williston, VT 05495.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and support during this difficult time.
