Gita Sachs passed away on June 6, 2026, at home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born Margit Bihari in Budapest, Hungary, on February 19, 1937, Gita survived the hardships of World War II and the Hungarian Revolution. She fled Hungary through Austria before immigrating to the United States in 1961. After six years of separation, she was reunited with her son, fulfilling the hope that had sustained her through her journey.

Gita made her home in Vermont, where she raised her family, volunteered with the Red Cross, earned her bachelor’s degree while working full time and became a proud United States citizen. Later, she moved to Colchester to live next door to her daughter and grandchildren, becoming a cherished part of their daily lives.

Known for her strength, resilience, sharp wit, fierce independence and unmistakable Hungarian spirit, Gita was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family deeply.

She is survived by her son, Zoltan Sachs, and his wife, Wanda, of Essex; daughters, Pia Sachs-Donerkiel and her husband, Alan Donerkiel, of Colchester, Vt., and Cara Sachs of Winooski, Vt.; grandchildren, Michael, Josh, Justin, Aric and Joseph; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Josh Jr., Cecelia and Jemma.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the ACLU or a charity of your choice.
