Jeff Wasserman passed away on September 12, 2026, after a long illness. Born in the Bronx in New York City in 1950, Jeff will be remembered as a passionate, values-driven individual in both personal and professional pursuits. His roots go back to his beloved grandparents, who immigrated from Eastern Europe to the United States in the early 20th century. Their influence and values guided many of his beliefs throughout life. Jeff also found deep joy in birding and photography, often combining the two on long walks and travels in search of a great shot.
Jeff was active in social causes throughout his life, sometimes pushing the boundaries of accepted norms, from environmental and social action to institutional change in his work. In recent years, he was deeply concerned about social injustice, the rise of anti-democratic actions at home, and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Jeff’s entire professional life was spent as a health care executive. He worked almost exclusively at major academic medical centers. He also consulted on institutional change and strategy at many of the nation’s most prestigious academic health systems. He was invited back to the University of Vermont Health Network in 2016 as executive director of the newly formed University of Vermont Medical Group, retiring in late 2020.
Just over 23 years ago, Jeff met and eventually married Bridget O’Brien in Burlington, Vt. Jeff considered Bridget to be his best friend and love of his life. Their new combined family included Jeff’s children, Marc and Emily, and Bridget’s children, Wickliffe and Caitlain. Jeff is also survived by five grandchildren, many other relatives, lifelong friends and professional colleagues.
