Here’s a hot take: Valentine’s Day gets a bad rap. Oh, sure, February 14 is easy to complain about. It’s nothing but a Hallmark holiday. It conflates love with consumerism and creates unrealistic expectations. It’s a lousy day to be single. It places outsize importance on one day of the year when we should really celebrate the ones we love all the time. (Because that’s realistic, right?) Conversation hearts taste like chalk. We get it. But hear us out.
What is so terrible about devoting a specific day to intentionally appreciating that special someone you love the most? How does doing so diminish your love the other 364 days of the year — or 365, in the case of this leap year? The answer: It doesn’t. But the key to enjoying Valentine’s Day is figuring out how to make it work for you and your significant other. And isn’t that also the key to lasting love?

Why does it seem like every other week Seven Days has one of these “Special Issues”?
This paper only comes out once a week. Isn’t there enough news around the state to write about without resorting to fill up this paper with “wedding weed etiquette” garbage that nobody cares about (nor will read)? I mean the legislature is in session…come on! Yet all Vermont media consumers are getting from their most-read newspaper is second-rate Bernie/national Dem primary reporting and valentine’s day tips from happily married couples.
There is a lot of real news to cover. Huge cost overruns (surprise!) have come to light for the proposed Moran redevelopment–how has that changed key decision makers’ opinions? What’s the latest on CityPlace; is Burlington’s economy and real estate market too soft for the developer to secure financing and pull the trigger? Chances for minimum wage veto override? Will Anthony Lamb be the first-ever UVM player drafted in the NBA? These are the issues and current events Vermonters care about.
I agree. Some of us still want actual news. I wound say the same thing to WCAX, WPTZ (or whatever the new name is now), the Free Press (lost cause), VPR, etc. But i guess news doesn’t sell anymore…
