Obituary: Lyle John Glidden 

Lyle John Glidden a lifelong resident of the community died Sunday, May 15, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Lyle was born in St. Albans on February 11, 1950, the son of the late Reuben A. and Daisy (Ploof) Glidden. Lyle was 66 years old.

He was educated in Franklin graduating from the Franklin High School in 1968. Lyle was a member of the High School Chorus and participated in the All-State Music Festival in Burlington and Franklin County Music Festival in St. Albans. During his teens and early twenties, he worked at the family business¸ The Lake Carmi Amusement Center, during the summers and was instrumental in hiring bands from Montreal, Toronto and throughout New England and New York.

He then attended Johnson State College and was a member of the Men’s Ensemble, traveling to Iceland and the French and Swiss Alps, during his freshman year of college. During his sophomore year he was one of the male Three Kings soloists in Amahl & The Night Visitors in the College Christmas Concert.

In 1965, Lyle’s grandfather purchased his first guitar for him, which was six-string, which he converted to a four-string base.

With his love of music, he was highly sought after by many bands as a sound engineer and producer. He worked for Taylor-Marine in Swanton, Brooks Pharmacy and Radio Shack and was the Audio-Visual Technician at B.F.A. for 3 years. Lyle had an incredible ear for music and produced several CDs for local musicians.

Lyle loved live music and recorded music and music on a string. He was an engineer/producer and “really good sound guy” and perfectionist who could play bass guitar. He was there on a beautiful summer afternoon in the early 80s for the Vermont Jazz Festival on the slopes of the Sugarbush Ski Resort when the John Cassel Band opened for headliner Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. He had vivid memories of that great show and thousands of others and he brought that knowledge to all of the arts.

Lyle was there at the beginning of the All Arts Council and worked on the idea of AAC Music Productions. He reviewed music for the AAC newspaper column and helped recruit artists for the Arts/First Register. And he was the arts council's go to guy for musicians and concert ideas. He could certainly make a (joyful) noise and was around when you needed him.

Lyle was predeceased by his mother, Daisy Ploof Glidden in 2011 and his father, Reuben A. Glidden in 2013. Like Lyle, both were lifelong residents of Franklin.

He is survived by his husband, Robert L. Glidden, of Franklin and his sister, Penny G. Taylor and her husband, Bruce, of Richmond, MA.

Friends are invited to call on Lyle’s family on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 11:00 AM at the Franklin Village Cemetery.
