COM YOURSELVES. . .

Three companies now own all U.S. cable news networks. Two companies — Comcast and TimeWarner — serve more than four in 10 households with cable. And, since passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was supposed to boost competition and lower prices, cable rates have actually gone up by 40 percent.

But here in the People’s Republic of Burlington, publicly owned media appears to be the wave of the future. Despite the recent dustup over Al Jazeera English — a contract was inked on July 23 to keep the global news channel on the dial for the foreseeable future — Seven Days readers gave Burlington Telecom a resounding thumbs-up for its all-inclusive media package of telephone, Internet and cable TV. The $64,000 question is, when will BT expand its coverage to the ’burbs? We’re waiting . . . in Colchester.
