At 81 years old, South Burlington resident Howard Fisher keeps busy as a volunteer for Age Well — he's one of 800 Vermonters who deliver more than 330,000 Meals on Wheels every year to residents in the northwestern part of the state. Eva Sollberger tagged along recently and asked recipients what healthy aging means to them.
Vermont's only cat café, Kitty Korner Café in Barre, was severely damaged in the July flood. As the water rose, owner Alexis Dexter hammered a hole in the floor, diverting the water away from 57 rescue cats — and flooding the building's basement in the process. Eva Sollberger recently returned to Kitty Korner to see the renovation work in progress.
In October, husband-and-wife owners Charles Reeves and Holly Cluse announced that beloved Burlington eatery Penny Cluse Café will close this year. Eva visited a few times to talk with staff and regulars about what this spot has meant to the community for the past 25 years. And she had her favorite meal one last time.
South Hero's Allenholm Farm dates back to 1870; seven generations of the Allen family have run it. For decades, Ray W. Allen and his late wife, Pam, welcomed visitors and operated a petting zoo there. Today, members of the fifth, sixth and seventh generations run the farm. Eva visited recently and picked some apples.
At 82 years old, Bob Maritano stays moving and gets a lot of mileage on his car. For 35 years, he has been volunteering for local nonprofits and feeding people. Eva Sollberger recently accompanied him on his Thursday morning meal deliveries to Shelburne Rescue and Sara Holbrook Community Center.
