The Magnificent 7: Must See, Must Do, September 3 to 9 

1. Pups & Pints

What better way to unwind from a work day than by sipping a cold one in the company of your canine companion? This year, the Humane Society of Chittenden County's Bark & Brew fundraiser went virtual with a series of livestreams from Vermont breweries. On Thursday, September 3, at 5:30 p.m., HSCC representatives wrap up the series at Mill River Brewing BBQ & Smokehouse in St. Albans while pets and their humans watch live on Facebook and Instragram. 2. Resting Place

For die-hard Halloween enthusiasts, the spooky season starts as early as August. (Does it ever really end?) Queen City occult authority and history buff Thea Lewis ushers in the spine-tingling time of year by launching her latest book, Lakeview Cemetery of Burlington, Vermont. Phoenix Books hosts a free virtual celebration for Lewis' 160-page look at "the stories behind the fascinating and sometimes famous citizens of Lakeview Cemetery." Preregister to join the party at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9.

3. Outside of the Box

Vermonters who don't yet feel comfortable entering indoor art galleries don't have to miss out on the state's creative offerings. Take Helen Day Art Center's outdoor exhibition "Exposed: Vermont Edition 2020." On view through October 31, this annual show features sculptures displayed in open-air locations throughout the town of Stowe — perfect for socially distanced viewing. Artists include Judith Wrend, whose metal works are made to move when touched or blown by the wind; John Matusz, who renders abstract designs in welded steel; and others.

4. Big Bang

"September 5th is the new July 4th," reads the eventbrite.com page for the Labor of Love Fireworks Fundraiser Spectacular. Described as a "drive-in, professional-grade, pyro-musical fireworks extravaganza," the incendiary exposition brightens the sky above Alburgh's Green Mountain Fireworks on Saturday, September 5, starting at 8 p.m. Attendees watch two acts featuring multiple set pieces and aerial fireworks as a musical soundtrack is broadcast to their car radios. (A sample video features an amped-up version of the Ghostbusters theme.) Partial ticket sales support the construction of the Alburgh Family Clubhouse, a childcare and parenting resource center.

5. Reconstructed Concert

Celtic and French Canadian music and dance take center stage — and screen — for the 28th annual New World Festival. Adapting for the coronavirus era, festival organizers transformed the event from a day of continuous concerts, dancing, workshops and kids' activities around Randolph to a two-hour hybrid in-person and virtual concert. Seventy-five audience members witness live performances from local trio Pete's Posse, piper Dan Houghton and harpist Rachel Clemente at the Chandler Center for the Arts, along with video performances recorded just for the fest by international artists. 6. A Reason to Run

Runners and walkers: Lace up your sneakers, get in a good stretch and pound the pavement to raise awareness of challenges facing Vermont's veterans. The sixth annual Granite City 5K Run/Walk for Veterans takes place virtually through November 7. Funds raised from the 3.1-mile challenge go to the Veterans' Place, a transitional housing facility in Northfield for homeless people who have served in the armed forces.  Not feeling super spunky? Skip the athletic event and make a tax-deductible donation.

7. On the Waterfront

Meant to honor the life of late Community Sailing Center board member Dana Bolton, the CSC's Dana Bolton Legacy Fund has two main objectives: to construct a pier providing universal access to Lake Champlain, and to establish a youth scholarship. Music lovers can contribute by making a donation to attend the Dana Bolton Flotilla Concert, a waterfront gig featuring local talent Ryan Montbleau, the Grift, Dave Grippo and the Kat Wright Trio. Audience members — who must attend by boat only — should preregister for this Saturday, September 5, affair.
