Stand Up for the Lake

What's SUP? It's short for standup paddleboarding, and it's been called the fastest-growing water sport in the world. Accessible to all ages and fitness levels, SUP is easy to learn and enjoy. In recent years, it's experienced a groundswell of popularity in Burlington, where Lake Champlain beckons all summer long. Get out on the water at the 10th annual Stand Up for the Lake, a benefit for the Community Sailing Center that includes a mile kids' race, three-mile recreational race and six-mile elite race. Or ride a wave of goodwill from the shore, where food and music make a splash.

Saturday, August 4, at the Burlington Surf Club. Info, standupforthelake.com.

Summertime transforms Burlington's streets and waterfront bike path into a parade of pedalers — and this year, it's easier than ever to hop on a set of bicycle wheels. Several downtown shops rent bikes for longer outings, but for quick, cost-effective, point-to-point rides, there's the new Greenride Bikeshare. The green and blue bikes can be found all over Chittenden County, from downtown Burlington to the airport and beyond. Simply reserve a bike online or use an app to acquire a PIN to unlock your seven-speed or electric-assist ride. Bikes can be returned to any other station within the service system, so no need to loop. Ride on!

Strolling down Burlington's Church Street Marketplace in the summer almost always comes with a side of street entertainment, from romantic accordion music to sidewalk standup comedy. But one Sunday in August, the pedestrian plaza becomes a spectacle of sun salutations. Hundreds of participants stretch and sweat at the annual Yoga on Church Street. The free community yoga class benefits HOPE Works, a nonprofit dedicated to ending sexual violence — so roll out a mat and bring a donation to the cause.

Sunday, August 12, on the Church Street Marketplace. Info, hopeworksvt.org.

Stand Up for the Lake

Info : hopeworksvt.org.

  • Explore Hidden Wilderness Along the Burlington Wildways

You might not realize it from the hustle and bustle of downtown, the postwar suburban sprawl of the New North End, or the hip postindustrial South End, but Burlington is pretty wild. Like, Henry David Thoreau/Walden Woods kind of wild. Despite its urban trappings, Vermont's largest city hides a treasure trove of natural wonders. The trick is knowing where to find them.
