Getting the Hives

Published May 2, 2007 at 6:12 p.m.

As one grows older, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with the current music scene. I can't even imagine how a newly-minted teenager of this era can begin to appreciate the 50 years of rock-and-roll. When I was coming of age, rock had been around for just over a decade, and I basically knew all of it from listening to my elder sibling's 45's.

Once in while, through sheer blind luck, I stumble onto a current group that hits me where I live. A year or so ago, I was up late watching Letterman, and this group came on and, yes, they blew my mind. As I remember it, Dave came out to shake their hands, as he does, and you could tell that he had loved the performance. He said something like, "This is how it's done!"

(I realize that this tune - see below - is already about 3 years old. For me, sadly, that qualifies as "current.")

So, ladies and gentlemen, presenting . . . the Hives!
