Stuck in Vermont: Screening for Skin Cancer With Diane Sullivan

Episode 575

Published May 9, 2019 at 6:00 a.m. | Updated May 28, 2019 at 5:51 p.m.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of that, we tagged along with Seven Days art director Diane Sullivan to Four Seasons Dermatology in Colchester for her first-ever skin checkup. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and more than 7,000 Americans will die from it in 2019.

Diane's husband, Seven Days photographer Matthew Thorsen, died from skin cancer on January 1 of this year. What began as a spot on his toe became cancerous and spread throughout his body. Matt was 51 years old when he died.

In March of 2016, Diane took us along on a journey into her colon during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month [see the video here]. Diane's brother Michael died suddenly of colorectal cancer in 2003 — three weeks after being diagnosed.

With both colon cancer and skin cancer, early detection is key. So make your health a priority and talk to your family, friends and doctor about the importance of getting screened.
