Alan L. Lewis, 88, died Tuesday morning, August 6, 2013, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Born May 10, 1925, in Rutland, Vt., he was son of the late Ernest E. and Violet (Lincoln) Lewis. Alan was the seventh generation to live at the Lewis Farm in Poultney, attended Poultney Public Schools and graduated from Poultney High School class of 1942, having served as class president and band member and played on the varsity basketball team.

He attended Norwich University for one year and served with the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946, serving in the South Pacific and attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Returning from the military he attended Columbia University from 1947 to 1948 and worked at NBC in the RCA Building as a tour guide from 1947 to 1948. He was a radio announcer for WBSR in Pensacola, Fla., and WMOB and WKRG in Mobile, Ala., from 1947 to 1950.

He married Barbara Jean Clary on October 23, 1948. Alan, Barbara and their first son, Mark, returned to Vermont in 1950. Alan worked as a salesman in the petroleum and grain industry in the greater Burlington area for more than 30 years. Returning to Lewbrook Farm in Poultney in 1984, he established the Alan Lewis Real Estate Company, staying very active until he retired in 1998. He was active with the Poultney High School Boosters Association, past president of the Poultney Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Poultney Rotary Club, Lakes Region Marketing Development Corp. and past trustee of the Poultney Historical Society, and he served the town as justice of the peace and member of the Board of Civil Authority.

Alan was very proud of his Poultney heritage, especially the fact that his ancestor, Josiah Lewis, served alongside Gen. Ethan Allen at the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and fought at the Battle of Hubbardton. He enjoyed spending time with family, cutting brush and raising polled Hereford cattle.

He is survived by his sons, Timothy J. Lewis and his wife, Laurie, of Burlington and Richard C. Lewis and his wife, Gloria, of Colchester; his sister, Marion L. Hinsman, of Poultney; grandchildren Adam, Nathan, Christian, Aaron, Timothy and Brittany Lewis, Brooke Bousquet, and Alison Bigenho; great grandchildren Marcus and Avery Lewis, Noah and Henry Bousquet, and Adilyn and Laina Bigenho; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and by his sons Mark and David Lewis.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 12, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave., Poultney, with the Rev. Robert Noble, pastor of the Castleton Federated Church officiating. Family and friends may call from noon until the time of the service at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Castleton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poultney Historical Society at 1499 East Main Street Poultney, VT 05764 or to One to One program at RSVP Volunteer Center at 6 Court Street, Rutland, VT 05701.
