Mrs. Hortence Mary Vanslette, age 91 years, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in The Homestead at Harborview in St. Albans Town
Born in Sheldon, Vermont on September 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ida (Jutra) Menard.
Hortence graduated from BFA-St. Albans in 1942, and furthered her education graduating from Johnson State Teachers College. She spent all of her working life as a teacher at Highgate Elementary School, and was a member of the National, State and Franklin County Retired Teachers Associations. She was a longtime faithful parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary-St. Louis parish.
On August 26, 1946, she married Aldolph Allen Vanslette, who predeceased her on, December 26, 1994.
Hortence was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, her life was devoted to her family. Hortence leaves three sons, Michael A. Vanslette, David A. Vanslette, and wife Nora, John G. Vanslette and wife Judy all of Highgate Springs. Three daughters, Patricia A. Johnson, and partner Donald Young of Essex Jct., Jane L. Vanslette of East Burke, Vermont, and Christine V. Ash and husband William Hoffman of Duxbury, MA; 12 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. Two brothers, Daniel Menard and wife Joyce of Fairfield, and Gerald Menard of Palm Springs, California, Sister Ruth Brosseau of Garden Grove, California, and Sister in laws Barbara Menard of Champlain, NY, and Teri Menard of Fairfield, Hazel Ledoux of Highgate Springs, Pearl Cyr of Swanton, and brother and sister in law Phillip (Vic) and Charlotte Vincelette of Virginia.
Besides her parents and husband, Hortence predeceased by her brothers, Maurice Menard, and Furman Menard; her sisters Marion Lussier, Hilda Demar, Lucille Kinerson, and Anita Paradee.
The liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 11:00 am from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton, VT; Father Luke P. Austin will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will take place in the spring at the Highgate Center Cemetery.
Family and Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue Swanton on Friday, January 22, 2016, from 3 to 6 pm.
Gifts in Hortence memory may be made to the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
