Robert F. Brown Sr., 82, a longtime resident of Washington Ave. in Bennington died Sunday May 24, 2015 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. following a brief illness

He was born in Cambridge, New York August 20, 1932. He was the son of the late Carl and Alfrieda (Thurber) Brown. Mr. Brown received his education in Pownal, VT.

On August 20, 1950 he married the former Rose Betit at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington.

From Sept. 5, 1950 until June 17, 1952 Bob served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany.

In earlier years Bob was employed at the BenMont Paper Company in Bennington. He later was a truck driver at Saint Johnsbury Trucking, Fairbanks Express and Holmes Trucking. Bob later went to work at Union Carbide/Energizer where he was employed for 24 years until he retired.

Bob was a member of the Pownal American Legion. He enjoyed building military models. He had a huge collection of models and had won several medals at different shows throughout the area. He enjoyed working in the yard, gardening, was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed listening to country and western music and watching old westerns on TV.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years Rose Brown of Bennington, his children, Robert F. Brown Jr. and his wife Mary Linda of Pownal, VT, Allen Brown of Hershey, PA, Pamela Toftness and her husband Bill of Bennington and James Brown of Island of Montserrant. Five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; a sister Hazel Hamilton of Buskirk, New York and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a brother Harold Brown and brother in law Bill Hamilton.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday May 27 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

The burial with military honors will follow at the family lot at Saint John’s Cemetery in North Bennington.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Brown Sr. may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
